A very late night in bootcamp in the German Bundeswehr, while learning basic “soldiering” and being a medic. Even though I ended up pushing mostly paper after bootcamp, I did get to learn about triage and equally gory stuff. Interesting, and it came in handy later in traffic accidents (one in particular, 6 months after bootcamp, at 4am while driving to base. Near the small town of Drensteinfurt, two older farm ladies, headed for a local market, lost track of the road in dense fog and drove heads-on into a ditch. The driver impaled herself on the steering wheel, while the other went through the windshield – neither was wearing sealt belts).
