In 1983 when starting my studies at the Westfälische Wilhelms Universität (WWU) in Münster, I also pledged with the same fraternity two of my uncles had been brothers in since the 1950s, when they were students: the KDStV Sauerlandia im CV (and yes, the swords are purely for ceremonial purposes, for those unfamiliar with it).
It is one of the oldest and largest in the Cartell Verband (CV), and was founded in 1847 – and has somewhat liberal values in the realm of catholic fraternities in Germany. I have always lived up to the life-long commitment, and enjoy very much to visit when I can.
